Open Access Publishing
Please notice – The Tel-Aviv University and MALMAD have signed “Open Access” module agreements with several publishers.
According to these agreements, researchers from Tel-Aviv University can publish “Open Access” articles in the publisher’s journals. Articles published within these agreements will be accessible for all - free of charge.
The internet has revolutionized access options to scientific research outputs and academic publications. Free access to scientific research and publications is quite crucial for research and teaching. Researchers and academic institutions share a common interest in this area, particularly in an era of decreasing resources and limited funding available for universities.
During the last few years, the scientific community has promoted several initiatives to improve scientific publications’ accessibility. To do so, several “Routes” have been developed:
“Gold Open Access”
The articles are published in journals which are accessible (for free) to all internet users, while the author holds/maintains the copyrights. This “Route” enables one to publish the article(s)/research in “Open Access” and in Hybrid journals. (Hybrid journals are journals which publish “Open Access” articles in addition to other articles). The researcher has to bear the costs of publication when choosing this “Route”.
“Green Open Access”
Free access to the article is only granted after a pre-defined “Embargo” period (usually 6-18 months). The publisher holds/maintains the copyrights and there might be usage restrictions.
“Diamond Open Access”
NPOs (Non-Profit Organizations) publish the article(s) online at no cost (neither the readers, nor the authors have to pay). Commercial use of the publications is prohibited.
As part of an agreement between the MALMAD consortia and Brill publisher, as of January 2024, researchers at Tel Aviv University can choose publishing open access articles in the publisher's journals at no additional costs.

Researchers are not required to do anything different when submitting their article to the publisher. If the peer-reviewed article was accepted for publication, the researcher would be asked whether he/she would prefer the “Open Access” option.
Once choosing the “Open Access” option, the article will automatically be forwarded to the “Open Access” publication module. To ensure affiliation to Tel Aviv University, please use your institutional email address when submitting the article.

Researchers can publish in about 900 SAGE Hybrid journals for a reduced cost of £200.
The list of journals can be found in the agreement and on the publisher’s website, under Sage Choice.
The publisher will inform the researcher that the article can be published (for £200) in the “Open Access” module. As soon as you agree, the article will automatically be sent to the "Open Access" publishing module.
As of January 2022, researchers will be able to publish "Open Access" articles in Wiley hybrid journals without paying a fee.
Once the article was accepted for publication in one of Wiley’s hybrid journals, the “Open Access” module would be the default one used. This option should be confirmed (there is, if one prefers, an option to choose the non “Open Access” module).

Several aspects should be considered while choosing the correct “host” for your publication:
- Matching the article to the journal subjects and objectives.
- Journal ranking in standard bibliometric indexes.
- Journal exposure – choosing the “Open Access” platform which refers to a large or a limited community of readers.
- Beware of “Predatory Journals” – Journals which charge money for publishing “Open Access” articles and research, yet, their academic authority is questionable.
Suspicious “Attractive, low cost” offers should be double-checked.
